First-Generation Honors Association

The First-Generation Honors Association (FGHA) assists first-generation students in their transition to the Honors College/Academic Scholars Program & Michigan State University and fosters their continued success in college. FGHA is committed to building a sense of community among first-generation students on campus. The group consists of first-generation students & advocates (faculty/staff who strive to support first-generation students) across campus.

The association offers:
  • Unique programming tailored to needs of first-generation students
  • Academic/personal support
  • Social events and networking with students, faculty, & staff
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Connections to campus resources and opportunities

Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program
The Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program connects first-generation students & international students with a peer mentor in the Michigan State University Honors College. 

Through the Mentorship Program, you'll have the opportunity to:
  • Meet other first-generation students at MSU
  • Participate in social & professional development activities
  • Learn from the experiences of your peers as you transition to and navigate MSU

  • Honors Navigators Kick-off | Wednesday, September 11 @ 6:00-8:00PM | Location TBA
    • Join FGHA & ISAB for the Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program Kick-Off where you’ll meet your mentor/mentee and learn about upcoming events hosted by the First-Generation Honors Association and the International Scholars Advisory Board.
  • Carbs, Careers, & Connections | Wednesday, October 16 | Time & location TBA
    • Are you thinking about an internship or co-op? Interested in studying abroad or away at some point? Hear from Honors College alumni about experiences they took advantage of as students, how they’ve applied their involvement in their work since graduation, and opportunities to consider in your time at MSU.
  • Finances 101 | Wednesday, November 13 | Time & location TBA
    • Grants and loans and the FAFSA, oh my! There’s a lot to remember when it comes to managing your money as a college student. Join this session to learn more about personal statements & submitting campus scholarship applications, the FAFSA, preparing a budget, and what a ‘credit score’ is.
  • End-of-Semester Celebration/Finals Study Night | Wednesday, December 4 | Location TBA
    • Celebrate the end of the semester with FGHA & ISAB! Participants of the Honors Navigators Peer Mentorship Program will be recognized before kicking off a study night to get ready for finals. Light refreshments provided.
