Campus Admissions

Current Students

Admittance to the Honors College is by invitation only. The admission process begins at the conclusion of Fall semester and closes by early February.

Criteria

Applications are welcomed from those who meet all of the following:

  • Students whose first undergraduate term at MSU was within the preceding 3 semesters (i.e., previous Spring, Summer or Fall) and who intend to study at MSU for at least 5 more semesters as of the summer following application to the Honors College.
  • Students who earned at least 12 graded credit hours in fall semester (with exception for pending credits in UGS 200H that may count toward the total);
  • Students who earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7;
  • Students who earned a Pass if enrolled in Math 103A.

Invitation

Students will receive a notification via the Registrar’s Office Confidential Messaging System that they have been invited. A link to an individualized Qualtrics form will follow via email.

Application

The application consists of two primary components:

    1. A list of activities that occur outside of classes since starting at MSU. Activities to include are employment, clubs, programs, volunteer activities, involvement in athletics, music or the arts, etc. The list should include any significant related experiences including college programs that occurred in the summer prior to your first-term of enrollment.
    2. Personal statement (max 750 words) responding to the following prompt:

Please describe your interest in joining the Honors College by tying the unique opportunities we offer to your personal narrative. Specifically identify experiences (curricular or cocurricular) afforded to Honors College members and indicate how they can enhance your personal, academic and/or professional development.

Campus Admissions applications are due January 14th, 2024.

Applications will be reviewed and scored by faculty and staff. An emphasis will be placed on the extent to which students personalize their response indicating a specific plan to take advantage of the Honors College experience. Final selections will be made by early February with notifications made via the Confidential Messaging System.

As you finalize your personal statement, click here for resources shared by the Writing Center during our personal statement workshop on January 4.

Students who are not invited to Honors College membership may still enhance their educational experience through Honors Options in regular courses or by requesting an override from the sponsoring department into a specific Honors course/section (overrides are granted based on availability and a review of students’ overall academic progress and program). Students may also graduate from the university with honor or high honor designations by meeting cumulative GPA standards, regardless of Honors College membership.
