University Integrative Studies Substitution Summary
Honors College members are REQUIRED to complete the following courses in general education (each course must be 3-4 credits):
- 1 course in introductory writing
- 2 courses in the area of the arts and humanities
- 2 courses in the area of the social sciences
- 2 courses (lecture classes) in the area of the natural sciences
University Lab* and University Diversity Distribution requirements linked to University Integrative Studies are eligible to be waived upon completion of all substitutions and approval by an Honors College academic advisor.
*If your major requires a lab as part of their major requirements, you must complete the lab component.
If your major has specific Natural Science requirements, you must follow the guidelines of those options specific to the major, known as alternative track. Examples would be majors in the College of Engineering and College of Natural Science.

This summary (last updated November 4, 2024) provides a starting point for planning substitution courses for IAH, ISS, ISB, and ISP, but is not an exhaustive list. All courses intended to meet Honors College University Integrative Studies substitutions must be approved via the HC University Requirements Substitution Request.
The Honors College deeply values diversity, equity, and inclusion as noted in our Statement of Values. In the spirit of University Diversity Distribution requirement, while not required for Honors College students at this time, we strongly encourage you to seek integrative studies substitutions that will broaden your understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Please review the DEI-specific IS Substitutions Sheet for possible substitutions and/or speak to your advisors about elective courses that explore national & international/multicultural diversity.
Only HONORS SECTIONS in IAH, ISS, ISB and ISP departments ARE acceptable in fulfilling University Integrative Studies requirements.
HONORS OPTIONS in Integrative Studies courses (IAH ISS ISB/P) WILL NOT fulfill University Integrative Studies requirements.
1 course in WRITING (replaces WRA 101) – WRA 195H or an approved departmental course in consultation with an Honors College advisor. This should cover composition, critical reading and research skill development. |

- Courses that are not acceptable: skill-based/practice-based (i.e. music performance, language-learning); research methodology; required on the primary degree, independent studies courses
- Substitution courses must be three to four credits
- A syllabus may need to be submitted to your Honors College advisor for “Special Topics” courses.
- If your major has specific Natural Science requirements, you must follow the guidelines of those options specific to the major, known as alternative track. You will not use substitutions. Examples would be majors in the College of Engineering and College of Natural Science.
- Education abroad courses should be approved in advance by Honors College to ensure appropriate credit with respect to Honors College university substitution requirements. Students should indicate Honors College membership on the Course Approval Form (CAF) and the form will route to HC for review.
