Honors Research Seminar Abroad: Immigration and Cultural Diversity in Israel

Program Description

This Honors College Seminar Abroad will introduce Honors College students, Academic Scholars Program students and Jewish Studies minor students (Honors College membership not required) to research through the lens of immigration and cultural diversity in Israel. Immigration, cultural diversity, and inter-cultural relationships present important issues for many countries in the world, and Israel is a unique context to study these topics. Students participating in the program will engage in weekly research seminars during the fall on MSU’s campus, an 18 day field research experience in Israel during winter break, and weekly research seminars during the spring on MSU’s campus. Students will present the results of their research projects at the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF). The course instructor and program leader is Dr. Yore Kedem, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures. Program Structure

This program consists of two courses (7 credits) that begin in the fall and end in the spring with winter break in Israel. Class meetings:

  • Fall at MSU: Tuesdays, 5-6:50 p.m., 208 Eustace-Cole Hall (Oct. 4 – Dec 6, 2022)
  • Winter break in Israel (Dec. 18 2022 – Jan. 4, 2023)
  • Spring at MSU: Tuesdays, 5-6:50 p.m., 208 Eustace-Cole Hall (Jan. 10 – Feb 28, 2023)

Courses

Enroll in these courses for the Fall Semester:

Honors College and Academic Scholars Program students will be enrolled in the following two courses:

  • UGS 200H (3 credits) – counts as one H experience
  • JS 390 (4 credits) – counts as a University Integrative Studies Substitution

Jewish Studies Minor students will be enrolled in the following two courses:

  • JS 399 (3 credits) – counts towards the Jewish Studies Minor
  • JS 390 (4 credits) – counts towards the Jewish Studies Minor

Estimated Costs

  • $1,970 Program Fee (not including tuition)
  • $3,000 Out of pocket expenses (airfare, food, passport, visas, etc.)

Each approved applicant will receive a $1,000 Levy Scholarship to pay for part to the program fee, from the Michael and Elaine Serling Institute for Jewish Studies and Modern Israel. Information on these scholarships is here https://jsp.msu.edu/study-abroad-scholarships/.
