High School Admissions

Students interested in becoming members of the Honors College should first apply for admission to Michigan State University. A completed application for MSU admission serves as the application for Honors College membership; there is no separate application process.

Invitation to the Honors College is carefully considered and competitive. Invitations are extended approximately eight weeks following MSU admission. We encourage students who do not hear from the Honors College to follow up regarding their interest using the instructions below.

The Honors College is home to a culturally diverse student body including but not limited to students from low income backgrounds, students who are the first in their family to attend college, and students with varied and multiple academic interests hailing from around the country and world.

Typically students in our first year class have a combination of the following:

  • Cumulative grade point averages that place students in the top 5% of students in their graduating class (GPA and strength of schedule is used where rank is not available)
  • A high number of rigorous courses including AP, IB, or dual enrollment appropriate given what the school offers
  • An average 32 ACT composite*
  • An average 1440 SAT total score*
  • Leadership activities
  • Research interests
  • Community service involvement

The Honors College may also request additional information, such as 7th semester grades, before extending an invitation to membership.

*For the 2020-2021 admissions cycle, standardized test scores are NOT required to be considered for an Honors College invitation.

How to Send Additional Information for Consideration

If you have not heard from the Honors College and you have exhibited a commitment to intellectual curiosity and academic rigor, you may submit an additional essay and current grades in order to receive further consideration.

For over 60 years, the Honors College has valued academic flexibility and innovative approaches to learning. Please tell us about an experience that shows how you have approached your high school career in a unique way.

Essays should be headed with your MSU Personal Identification (PID) number.

There is no length requirement. Please also include a copy of your 7th semester/1st semester/1st trimester senior year high school transcript.

All materials should be sent via U.S. mail by March 1st of the senior year to:

Dr. Bess German
Assistant Dean, Honors College
Michigan State University,
468 E. Circle Drive, Room 105
East Lansing, MI, 48824

If preferred, your materials can also be submitted via e-mail to honors@msu.edu.
Students can e-mail their essays in .pdf or .doc/docx formats.
Note: all e-mailed transcripts must be sent by a high school counselor to be considered valid.

The Honors College reserves the right to close admissions at any time, even if that date is prior to March 1st.
