Program Requirements

To remain a member in good standing, an Honors College student must fulfill the following requirements:

  • University Integrative Studies substitutions: Honors College substitutions replaces University Integrative Studies (IAH, ISS, ISB, ISP, WRA) requirements. Visit the Honors College University Integrative Studies Substitutions page to learn more about completing an enriched program of study in general education.

  • Honors Experiences: Students must complete at least 3 Honors experiences by the end of the second Spring semester and at least 8 total Honors experiences by graduation. Honors experiences provide an opportunity for in-depth study of specific course topics/topics of interest. For students completing two degrees, a total of 10 Honors experiences is required for Honors College notation on both degrees.

  • Honors College Academic Progress Plan (HCAPP): Complete the HCAPP forms, as described below:

Effective January 1, 2020, the Honors College Self Reflection (SRS) is no longer a requirement for Honors College membership.

The University Integrative Studies substitution form is completed ‘as needed,’ when a student enrolls in a substitution course (no later than the semester the student is enrolled in the course). Substitutions must be approved in advance of taking the course.

Visit the HCAPP page more information, including instructions and specific due dates.
  • GPA: Establish a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 during the freshman year and maintain a GPA of at least 3.2 until graduation.

Student records will be reviewed regularly. Students who do not meet the above continuing membership requirements will face release from the Honors College.

Academic Warning for Honors College members – SS20

In light of this current semester’s option to allow MSU students to choose a binary grade (S/NS) or a numerical grade in each course, the Honors College will not require this semester’s cumulative GPA be at or above a 3.2 to maintain membership.

Therefore, if you are currently on academic warning, you will have until the end of Fall semester 2020 to raise your cumulative GPA to the minimum 3.2.  If your cumulative GPA falls below a 3.2 this semester, Honors College will not place you on academic warning.

A cumulative GPA of at least a 3.2 is always required to graduate from the Honors College.
